I have my father's crooked fingers
And my mother's vicious teeth.

There comes a time

My sense of self is hyped
On stimulants and praise
Before it dashes itself
Against darkness
Robbing itself of substance
And boundaries.

I am rebuilt cyclically,
Did you know?
I don't think you did.

But I am not defined by you

I am a natural monument
A force of nature
That waves its banner
In the thronging masses.
Among many, I am

Drag You To Hell   Stiletto knives coated in jealousy
Are sharper than my forked tongue;
I am ready for you, this time,
And the next steps you dance
Will be in secret, with Hades' wife.

   We'll start off slowly, one step at a time.
I'll smile, and whisper my lies. I'll draw you close to me,
And hold you one last time. You do not smell the scent of
Pure envy, for the scent of her perfume is much stronger.

   I'll take a step toward you
And whisper my venom into your ears.
You'll hunger for more, until I end it
Abruptly, with a sudden step backward,
And a deceitful and depraved smile.

white noiseThe only thing that seems to keep the world out of my head these days
is white noise
it's a rush of excitedly flapping wings
it's nothing you could grasp but a sound and a colour that is none
I try to keep the world out
(she is playing her music too loud too much these days)
and I think of you, ears buzzing with white noises until they ache.
And I catch myself thinking
I wish you were my white noise -
the sound in between my heartbeats,
the same words whispered so close to my ear they sound like beautiful little secrets,
the rock I cling to when the waves crash violently all around me to keep from drowning, I wish you were
my home, my favourite pair of arms, my heart, my safe place, the one to soothe my mind.
I wish you were so many more things
than just far away and as impossible to touch
as white noise.

LipsWhat softer tools;
flushed with our placid regret
as we use them to take, to cheat,
to steal.

With them we lie and we bargain,
set in our ways of greed,
but through them we kiss, we love--
soft, tender passions
somehow erasing all the wrong.

WoodstoveWoodstove

It was cold.
A sudden crackle,
the snap of flame
and red warmth spread through the room
from the staunch, cast-iron woodstove
huddled in a corner
by the rocking chair.
Its glass window was blackened
with soot, testifying to its unwavering service
defending the house from winter's merciless jaws
with only a few pieces of wood
and some old newspaper. Nothing
had kept it from its job in all its long years.
Even when the fickle electric neighbors
stopped working,
the woodstove happily gave its warmth for
cooking, heating water,
giving light.

Now the house is empty
and the always-faithful woodstove
has been abandone

planetary perspectivedid you ever stare into the sun as she was falling behind the horizon
and realize
you're the one falling?

could you finally assimilate, during her spectacular dive,
the wonderous speed
at which you're moving?

did you ever walk barefoot by the roaring, receding ocean
and ponder in awe
the distant moon's attraction?

did you ever observe great orion plunge into a forest
and mourn
when the hunter didn't find his way home

but stands forever in cold space,
while we, in our naïvety, just keep going
around

and around

?

ResolutionIf I were writing from the other side,
I would say
This road was not on my map.
No one goes there
on purpose.
And then tell you how
I escaped.

I asked for help, for change,
and grief was the answer:
Grief as old and hollow as snowfall,
grief as heavy
as snowfall,

grief that said, "You,
You are the spent ember,
You are the last angry voice
and when you pass
the dark
will have been waiting."

The grief was right. I burn,
I burn cold and heavy,
crouching in the ashes of greatness,
I burn,
and the fuel is low.

The dark is waiting.

But what angel comes
with words of despair? Even Job
had no angels to tell him, "Alas."

leavingleaving is a can that you
kick around in the street
because it's been a long day
& it makes you feel better.

some days you kick it
harder, longer than others,
& some days there just
aren't enough cans or streets.

but the thing about leaving
is that when the
street lights come on,
you always end up going home.

FisheyeYour honest words perch upon brash lips,
teetering on thoughtful intentions; a super hero's cape
embroidered with moth holes, gossamered secret identity
shielding the crestfallen heart you disguise as armor,
forgotten about with a forced amnesia
until its lonely beating rips a hole
through your defenses.

I'm your kryptonite and your sunshine—
the thing that makes you human, and weak,
and untouchable,
and mighty,
and a villain to the unloved,
and my savior.

I'm the have and have-not,
the desired and the disdained—
for your every rib aches to feel the pressure of my palms
and the tangle of my fingers witching for you

bits of bonelet it be known:

i loved you most when you were messy,
unkempt--your fingers like a spotted
cow's hide with ink and peppered with
paper cuts; a faded old t-shirt and your
hair on end, holey jeans loose on your
hips. your flaws were your beauty, when
i pressed my cheek to your chest, i took
in the sweet, spicy scent of you and knew
if you smelled like clean and simple soap,
it wouldn't be the same.

you were wild with wanderlust, it hung in
the air around you like a mist of rain and
it soaked you through, ate you up, it
seeped beneath your skin to take root in
your heart.

i was as captivated by you as you were
by the ocean,

fireworksten thousand stars blaze
in fleeting existence
ash falls to the ground

InconsequentialSuch an irony, to be so close to you,
so accidentally intimate. So sad those costumes
we had borrowed, disguises for those who
otherwise might have recognised our shades.

If only the moment had supported
the depths of our hidden agenda, if only
our potentiality had exploded around us.

As I departed you proffered your hand,
I felt your transcendent smile. You
turned your back, for your next assignment
was closing in on you. I walked away
as the door was closing behind me.

I worked on this for quite a while, and I'm still not sure if I'm entirely happy with it. What do you guys think? I may come back to this. I haven't posted anything in a little bit, so I figured I would, though.

Also, tetractys are still kind of my favorite thing.
